Reflection
This online unit plan was developed as part of ITEC 7480, Introduction to Online Learning. Fifth-grade students learned about social studies standards, including World War I, the Harlem Renaissance, the Jazz Age, automobiles, sports, and five associated famous people from that time. I developed this unit from my own knowledge as well as from online sources that I found.
This unit has multiple points of access for content, process, and product. Students are invited in each content module to use their creativity to create an original product to showcase their learning. Additionally, there are collaborative opportunities and instructor support build into each learning opportunity. The rich digital content helps students to fully understand and interact with the material to learn.
As this was my first completely online unit, there are several things that I learned about the process that I would improve in my next online unit. First, I would have a pre-assessment on the unit content to determine what students knew and to uncover potential misconceptions before beginning. Second, I would build in more formative checkpoints along the way in the unit. Finally, I would have more opportunities for acceleration and remediation in the unit to meet the needs of all learners.
If I taught in an online school, this unit plan would be shared with my grade-level team for feedback and revision. Although I don’t teach in an online school, this unit could still be shared with the fifth-grade team at my school to give them ideas for blended lessons in their social studies units. This project could be assessed by comparing student scores on the fifth-grade Georgia Milestones Social Studies assessment.
